Gritty water or particles in the bottom of a glass usually point to one of a few common causes.

Short answer: On public water, sediment often follows nearby main work or hydrant flushing. On a private well, sediment can indicate a well or pump issue, aging plumbing, or naturally occurring fine particles. A whole-house sediment filter addresses most cases once the source is identified.

  • Public water: recent main break, repair, or hydrant flushing nearby that stirs up sediment in the distribution system.
  • Private well: sand or fine particles from the aquifer, a well screen or casing issue, or a failing pump.
  • Aging plumbing: corrosion or mineral buildup breaking loose inside pipes.
