Delaware carbon-media decision
For Delaware public water, identify the exact system before selecting activated carbon. Artesian, Tidewater Utilities, Veolia Water Delaware (formerly SUEZ), Newark, Dover, and Wilmington do not represent one statewide treatment profile; source water, plant, and disinfectant residual can vary. Artesian and Newark documents report chlorine treatment/residuals, while Tidewater's official guidance identifies seasonal chlorine-to-chloramine changes for Southern Shores and some Tidewater communities. A carbon bed selected for chlorine is not automatically the right bed for chloramine, PFAS, VOCs, or a private-well contaminant. Confirm the current CCR and the cartridge's NSF/ANSI claim for your specific target.

These are not promises of performance. A carbon tank that is technically large enough at 5 gpm may create a noticeable pressure drop when a shower, washer, and hose run together. Sizing up one tank size is often inexpensive insurance when the service-flow rating is close to the household peak.
Plumbing details that prevent pressure problems
- Do not neck the treatment branch down below the home's main pipe size; keep a full-size 1-inch run through the bypass where the house plumbing supports it.
- Measure pressure before and after the filter at realistic flow. Pressure loss rises as flow rises, especially through a small bed or clogged cartridge.
- A slim 10-inch cartridge housing is useful for light sediment, but it can load quickly and restrict a whole house. Use a larger 20-inch or high-flow housing when the test and flow demand justify it.
- Install isolation valves and a bypass so the home can still receive water during service without forcing untreated water into a drinking tap by accident.
Match the media to the problem
Use a sediment prefilter for grit, properly selected activated carbon for chlorine taste and odor, and catalytic carbon only when the utility report or test shows the disinfectant and contact-time requirements justify it. Iron and manganese need oxidation and filtration media selected for pH, concentration, and flow; hardness needs a softener; nitrate, PFAS, and salinity need a certified process such as RO, ion exchange, or contaminant-rated carbon. A generic carbon tank is not a universal Delaware well-water system.
Installed cost and replacement planning
Pricing varies with the valve, tank size, bypass plumbing, pretreatment, electrical needs, access, and whether a well pump or drain line must be modified. As a planning range, a basic cartridge setup may be several hundred dollars installed, while a correctly sized whole-house carbon, iron, or multi-stage system can run into the low thousands. Replacement sediment cartridges are commonly tens of dollars and may last a few months; carbon media and specialty media are usually replaced or serviced on a multi-year interval set by gallons, contaminant loading, and testing. Get a written scope that states the design flow, media volume, certification claim, pressure-drop assumption, and replacement interval instead of comparing tank prices alone.
