Hard Water and Scale

Scale buildup, soap that won't lather, and spotted dishes are common signs of hard groundwater in much of Delaware.

Short answer: Hard water comes from dissolved calcium and magnesium, common in Delaware groundwater. It's a nuisance, not a health risk, and is addressed with a water softener matched to your hardness level.

Why hardness varies across Delaware

Hardness is created mainly by dissolved calcium and magnesium. A private well's result depends on the aquifer, well depth, residence time, and local geology; a public-water customer's result depends on the exact utility source and treatment blend. New Castle groundwater and coastal or inland Kent and Sussex groundwater should not be assumed to have the same hardness. Use a laboratory result or the current utility report when sizing a softener.

Hardness treatment decisions

A softener is appropriate when the problem is scale-forming calcium and magnesium and the household accepts salt or potassium maintenance. It does not remove nitrate, PFAS, bacteria, iron in every form, or saltwater intrusion. If a coastal well has a salty taste, measure chloride and sodium before installing a softener. If iron or manganese is present, pretreatment may be needed so the resin does not foul.

How to size a softener

Capacity is based on hardness, daily gallons, and the desired reserve, not just bedrooms. Ask for the hardness value in the units used by the test, the programmed capacity, salt dose, regeneration frequency, and service-flow rating. A system that regenerates constantly wastes salt and water; an oversized system can also perform poorly if it is programmed without enough actual demand. Confirm the bypass and drain arrangement before installation.

  1. Check your CCR for a hardness value (public water) or test your well for hardness.
  2. Compare your hardness level to typical softener sizing guidance.
  3. Choose a softener sized to your household's water use and hardness level (see Water Softeners).
  4. Maintain the softener's salt level and resin bed per manufacturer instructions.

  • Skipping regular salt refills, which reduces softener effectiveness

Hardness troubleshooting by fixture

Scale on a showerhead, white spotting on glass, and poor soap lather usually point toward hardness. If only one faucet has buildup, inspect the aerator and local plumbing before sizing a whole-house system. Ask whether the result is expressed as mg/L or grains per gallon; those units are not interchangeable when setting a controller or comparing installer proposals.

If iron, manganese, chloride, nitrate, or sodium is also present, keep those decisions separate from the hardness setting. A softener solves scale but does not make an unknown water result safe.

Before installation, compare the raw and treated hardness at a kitchen tap and a bathroom tap. A bypassed outdoor faucet is expected to remain untreated; an indoor fixture that remains hard may indicate an undersized valve, an incorrect bypass position, or a plumbing branch that does not pass through the equipment.

Hardness by itself is usually an aesthetic and plumbing concern, but the treatment decision still affects sodium, wastewater, maintenance, and household cost. A practical evaluation should therefore include the utility or laboratory result, fixture symptoms, household flow demand, and the home's existing plumbing layout. That information is enough to reject a generic “one-size-fits-all” quote and to decide whether a softener, a smaller point-of-use solution, or no treatment is appropriate.
