Private-well treatment should always start with a test result, never a guess.

Private wells

Short answer: Test first, then match treatment to the specific contaminant and level found. A single all-purpose system rarely addresses everything a Delaware well might need.

Common well concerns and matching treatment

  • Bacteria: disinfection (shock chlorination) and retesting; see Bacteria in Well Water.
  • Nitrate: reverse osmosis or ion exchange rated for nitrate; see Nitrate.
  • Iron/manganese: oxidation/filtration media matched to the specific metal; see Iron and Manganese.
  • Hardness: a properly sized water softener; see Water Softeners.
  • Salinity/chloride: reverse osmosis for point-of-use, or professional evaluation of well depth and construction for whole-house concerns; see Salty Well Water.
  • PFAS: certified activated carbon, RO, or ion exchange; see PFAS Reduction.

Match the Delaware location to the test

Use a location as a reason to choose a test panel, not as a substitute for one. Agricultural or shallow-well properties in Sussex and Kent deserve nitrate/nitrite attention; coastal Sussex properties deserve chloride/salinity attention; and New Castle properties near the Delaware River or an identified investigation area may need additional site-specific review. Step-by-step

  1. Test through a certified laboratory before buying anything (see Private Well Testing).
  2. Match treatment specifically to what the test found, not a generic "well water" package.
  3. Confirm NSF/ANSI certification for the specific contaminant.
  4. Retest after installation to confirm the system is performing as expected.

Build the treatment train in the right order

Most Delaware well systems work best when the treatment order follows the test result and the water chemistry. A sediment stage protects valves and membranes. Oxidation or aeration may be needed before iron and manganese filtration. A softener can address hardness, but high iron or manganese may require separate pretreatment. Carbon can improve taste and odor, while nitrate, PFAS, and salinity require a certified process selected for the actual result. Disinfection for bacteria is a separate safety step and should be followed by retesting.

Ask the installer to document the raw-water values, design flow, media volume, regeneration or backwash rate, drain requirements, bypass arrangement, and expected replacement interval. “Whole-house well treatment” is not a contaminant claim. If a quote does not identify what the equipment is designed to remove, it is impossible to compare it with another quote.

Maintenance and verification

  • Replace sediment cartridges before they become a pressure-drop problem.
  • Keep carbon, softener, and specialty-media service records.
  • Test after installation and after major well, pump, or plumbing work.
  • Do not bypass treatment indefinitely during a suspected contamination event without a safe alternate-water plan.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a single system marketed as a universal "well water solution"
  • Skipping the test and guessing based on taste, odor, or staining alone
  • Not retesting after installation

Questions to ask an installer

  • Which raw-water result is each stage designed to address?
  • What is the rated service flow and pressure drop at that flow?
  • What backwash, drain, brine, or wastewater capacity does the system require?
  • Which parts and media are replaced, and at what gallon or time interval?
  • What laboratory test will verify performance after installation?

Be cautious with packages sold as a universal Delaware well-water solution. A system that improves iron staining may not reduce nitrate; a carbon tank that improves odor may not remove PFAS; and a softener does not correct saltwater intrusion. The safest sequence is test, design, install, verify, and document.

When a well professional should be involved

Bring in a licensed well contractor when the concern follows flooding, pump failure, low yield, pressure loss, a new well, or a change in water level. Treatment equipment cannot correct a damaged casing, unsanitary cap, failed seal, or well drawing from the wrong interval. Can one system fix everything my well test found?

Sometimes multiple concerns share a compatible treatment approach, but often a well needs more than one type of treatment (for example, a softener plus a separate iron filter). Match each concern to its own certified solution.
