Lead Reduction
A certified lead-reduction filter is a practical interim step, but it doesn't replace the underlying service line.
Short answer: Use a filter certified under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for lead reduction, maintain it on schedule, and understand it treats water at the point of use — it does not remove lead from your service line or premise plumbing. See Lead Service Line Inventory for the underlying issue.
What certified lead filters do
- Reduce lead at the specific tap where the filter is installed
- Are tested and certified against a specific performance standard (NSF/ANSI 53 or 58)
- Require replacement per the manufacturer's schedule to remain effective
What they don't do
- Remove lead from the service line itself
- Protect every tap in the house unless installed at each one, or paired with a certified whole-house system
- Work past their rated capacity — an expired filter can stop being effective without an obvious sign

- Check your utility's lead service line inventory for your address (see Lead Service Line Inventory).
- Choose a filter certified specifically for lead reduction, not just general filtration.
- Install at the taps used for drinking and cooking.
- Replace cartridges on the manufacturer's schedule, not just when flow slows.
Common mistakes
- Assuming any carbon filter reduces lead without specific certification
- Treating a point-of-use filter as a substitute for service line replacement
- Running a cartridge past its rated capacity
